In memory of Andrew Herzenberg A rising star in the field of kidney pathology, not just locally, but nationally and internationally, Andrew  Herzenberg was greatly appreciated by staff and residents at the University Health Network and the broader University of Toronto community for his renal pathology expertise and superb teaching.  He was also widely respected by the greater Toronto nephrology community for his expert diagnostic skills and genuine enthusiasm for kidney pathology. His growing international stature is illustrated by his recent involvement in the Consortium that developed the new pathology classification for IgA nephropathy (IgAN).  Not satisfied with that, he was instrumental in organizing and was a lead pathologist in a recently-completed validation study of the new classification involving centers throughout United States. This includes the Mayo Clinic, Vanderbilt University and University of Alabama. In addition, Andrew was an inaugural member of the renal pathology committee for the international NEPTUNE Project. A NIH-funded study that involves the Toronto GN Registry and 14 other centers in the US . This Consortium is focused on the most advanced methods of molecular diagnostic testing of renal tissue and determines their relationship to clinical events for patients with kidney disease. His expertise extended beyond the clinical pathological realm.  Most recently, at a basic research level,  he initiated and developed a unique project involving an assay to determine the diagnostic and potential therapeutic role of the new antigen PLA2R in assessing patients with membranous nephropathy, in Toronto and beyond.  On a personal level, Andrew approached life, as he did pathology, full steam ahead. Although his death is overwhelmingly sad, and the circumstances unbelievable, outdoor adventure was intrinsic to his being and it defined him. We will miss his smile and his energy. We want to honour Andrew by establishing an Annual Herzenberg Lectureship. There is immense support such an event. In partnership with the Department of Pathology at UHN and the University of Toronto Division of Nephrology, we respectfully request donations to support this endowment.  The objective is to establish this Lectureship as a permanent part of the academic year, focused on engaging both the nephrology and pathology communities in Toronto, much as Andrew did in his professional life. The Lectureship is in keeping with his spirit and will help to remember and celebrate the life of Andrew Herzenberg.  Contributions can be made to the Andrew Herzenberg Fund through the Toronto General Foundation.
